Richard Parr

Associate Director for Curricular and Instructional Programs,
Rice University School Mathematics Project

Hello! My name is Richard Parr and I'm a mathematics educator from Houston, Texas.

I currently work at my alma mater as Associate Director for Curricular and Instructional Programs for the Rice University School Mathematics Project, a project I have worked with extensively with since graduating college.

Before starting this job I taught for 14 years in the Fort Bend Independent School District, teaching all high school math courses from Algebra I through AP Calculus. I love teaching mathematics and learning how people learn mathematics.

One of my main interests is the use of technology in the classroom and how it affects student comprehension of mathematical concepts. I use Texas Instrument calculators extensively in class and am a National Instructor for the Teachers Teaching With Technology program, although I have also done some teaching using Casio calculators as well. I 'm active in many organizations that promote better mathematics education such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). I also participated in the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute and am a member of the Rice University site.

Although mathematics is the main focus of my life it is not my only love. Dogs are a great favorite of mine and I am a proud chihuahua owner. I am a big music lover, especially classical music and opera. I am also an enthusiastic Disney fan. I love traveling to Disney parks, watching Disney animated classics, and collecting Disneyana. I also enjoy travel throughout the United States.
